The Dharma Wheel, or Dharmachakra in Sanskrit, is one of the oldest symbols of Buddhism. It goes back to the idea of the chakravartin, or "wheel turning king," who would run his country guided by virtue. The Buddha was seen as a wheel-turning sage. Each time he taught his disciples, he was said to have turned the Dharma wheel of wisdom and insight for the benefit of all beings. A symbol of the root of all the holy Dharma, the Dharma Wheel can remind us of the unfathomable qualities of the three jewels, reinvigorating our faith in the Dharma, as well as the Buddha within.
