The Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind From Samsara
by Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and

“Every school of Buddhism teaches the Four Thoughts that Reverse the Mind from Samsara, sometimes called the Four Thoughts of Renunciation, in some form. These four statements are the essence of Buddha Shakyamuni’s original teachings to his first group of students, and thus of Basic Buddhism as found today in the Theravadan school.
These fundamental understandings present us with a set of what we might call reality checks. Each offers us a way of looking at our present reality that is contrary to our habitual ways of regarding things. This fact makes them both very challenging and highly rewarding to contemplate.”
These Four Thoughts are also considered the Four Common Outer Preliminaries one contemplates before beginning the Uncommon Preliminaries of the Ngondro (Preliminary Practices).
